what is the orthodox church's standpoint on abortion and furthermore the use of aborted fetal tissue for transplants and research? does the church support this? if so, why not and is there anything in the bible or in any writings that says this?

Christos Anesti father Peter! Mary Costas introduced us to your website. Very impressive. Funny with all the computer heads here at St. Nicholas that we don't have a website of our own. Mary told us of new icons you are installing at your church. Will you be putting images on the web? Won't keep you too long, but we did want to say Hello and also wish Constantine good wishes for we found out that he is going to pursue becoming a priest. We saw your Mother-in-law, Mary, during Holy week here at St. Nicholas and it was great seeing her and she told us that you all are well. Thank God. Give our love to Nikki and your family.

Christ is risen! I found the website when ordering a book through St Vlad's -- when I came to the beautiful photograph of the sanctuary tears came to my eyes and a joy to my heart. Though we are happy in California, blessed with a wonderful parish at St Demetrios in Camarillo, CA, it was at St Alexander's that my family and I truly began to discover what it means to invite our Lord into our home as its Master. With glory to God for His patience and love -- what miracles he brings to all our lives if only we let him. To see the names of those we love involved in the life of St Alexander reinforces the many blessings that God has allowed us in our lifetime. Our prayers for health for all. Being able to send this message means so much. Though we may not be in direct contact as often as we should, please know that you are all remembered daily in our prayers. God bless the ministry and good works of all. Gregory.

My nephew in West Virginia just informed me that I can now see the Services on the Internet. Is this so? Also, I enjoyed reading all the questions & statements above, however, I do not know where the answers to them are. There's no Greek Orthodox Church here in Bend, Or. & I sure miss receiving Communion. I am a heart patient & i was just diagnosed with Cancer. May God Bless you for having our church services on the internet. Respectfully yours, Helen E.Pallis Schick

I like reading about the different programs different Churches have set up and came upon your site. I see the iconography is very beautiful and coming along nicely. God Bless and continue the wonderful work. I just have one question, I read the entry regarding Lastdayapostle@hotmail.com and since it was posted on the guestbook that it must have some merit; is this possible? By all means I do believe in out of the ordinary things occuring and somehow being touched and connected to Jesus maybe this is just too much for me to take in right now. I will visit the site though. Thanks, Hronia Pola, Yvonne

My husband and I were very impressed by the friendly people. They talked to us and were very kind even though we were not Greek. My husband and I were raised Catholic. We are very interested in learning more about the Orthodox Church. We live in Washington now but will move to California this summer. I also want to thank all of you who support and comfort my cousin, Alexandra Fotis, at this difficult time of the death of her father. Anthony and I were so moved and comforted by the ritual and tradition of the services we attended. I have not attended services since the death of my own parents and I found them to be comforting, familar and a spiritual balm at a difficult time. One must go to an Orthodox Priest for the sacrament of Holy Confession. It is not proper or permissible to confess to a Roman Catholic priest or receive HOly Communion in the Roman Catholic Church, especially when a Greek Orthodox Church is close by. The Sacrament of Holy Confession in the Greek Orthodox Church is for Eastern Orthodox Christians. There are two Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose, call and visit one of them.

  • Father Peter Salmas: <frpeter@goholycross.org>
Belmont, CA USA - Friday, August 23, 2002
All you need to do is call your priest and schedule a confession. The Sacrament of Holy Confession is not limited to only a few weeks in Great Lent or before a major feast day. Holy Communion should not be received if we have not made the proper preparations, i.e. prayer, fasting, and confession.

  • MaRiA KaLoGeRoS <mk@aol.com>

How would I be able to go to Confession? Is it given only during Lent and before major feast days? Or would I talk with my Priest and schedule a time with him? Also, if I were to go to Confession at a Catholic church, would that be accepted by our own church?

  • Father Peter <frpeter@goholycross.org>

Dear Maria, Making time for the Sacrament of Confession is a responsibility of every Orthodox Christian. Yes, we can confess our sins to God but He has instructed us and provided a means by which we ask for His forgivenes. Confessing our sins in the presence of a priest is a tradition that dates back to the time of Christ and His disciples. Jesus tells us in the Gospels of Saints Matthew and John that the authority to forgive sins is granted to them. In the early church people would stand to confess their sins to God in the presence of the congregation. As the Church grew in numbers this became impractical and so the priests began to witness confessions on behalf of the Church community. In confession, we stand before the Icon of Christ in the presence of the priest, confessing our sins and failures. The priest is present to offer spiritual counsel and pray the prayer of forgiveness, asking for the forgiveness of sins both voluntary and involuntary. Once cleansed of our sins we rededicate our life to serve Him with greater love and humility and obedience. Through confession we seek greater spiritual growth and closeness with our Lord.

I am almost years old and a Greek Orthodox christian. I have never been to Confession, but have received Holy Communion many times. I am not to say I am sinless, and truthfully, there is no excuse for me not going to Confession ever. Last night, I had a dream about Confession. I'm a little scared. Is it really necessary to confess our sins to a priest? Or can we confess to God on our own through prayer? Thank you.

  • Orthodox Christian Church Edmonton: <nospam_jfraese@intebaun.com>
Edmonton, AB Canada - Saturday, July 06, 2002
I have to respond to the poster below who argues that Orthodoxy must change to accommodate the changes in a globalizing world. I would suggest that the Orthodox Faith retains its very "Orthodoxy" by maintaining the absolute truths of the Christian religion once revealed to the saints. As these truths are not relativities dependant upon the whim of society, altering the Orthodox Church one iota to accommodate changes in what the world thinks would be tantamount to abandoning the idea of absolute truth in Orthodoxy. We cannot say that Orthodoxy is the divinely-guided church of Christ if we seek to conform it to the relative realities of culture and society - for Christ is not of this world, and we know that the world is the domain of the fallen angels. Subordinating Orthodoxy to the fallen natures of men and demons by making it an appendage of pop-culture would, inherently, sap Orthodoxy of vitality and durability. This is exactly what has happened in many modernist jurisdictions.

Orthodoxy needs the modern and typically "western" virtues of flexibility; the ability to cope with change as a law of our modern culture; objectivity, openness, fairness, self-criticism; and a sense of the unity of modern global culture in which no one is or can remain an island. If Orthodoxy is to survive as a viable lifestyle attractive to modern men and women, it will not be as an obscurantist, anti-intellectual culture of folklore and ritualism, sustained by the rejection of modernity and change.

Eight months ago I relocated from NYC to Georgia, in the town on Carrollton, I've been searching for a Greek Church to go to since then, and about last week I hooked up my internet service with my phone provider, and started a search on the internet. I found 9 different Greek orthodox churches, ranging from atlanta to Gwinett county, but none in Douglassville or Carroll(Carrollton)counties, these other churches are way out of my way to go to, im talking about anything from 1-4 hours one way. My Question is, are there going to be any churches built in Carroll county or Douglassville county , so that I may enter church regularly, all we have out here is Baptist churches. Please get back to me as soon as possible, Thank You. enj523813@aol.com- John(Ioannis)Tsirakidis.

  • Michael Anthony Careccia: <Lastdayapostle@hotmail.com>
New York, NY USA - Friday, June 07, 2002
Hi, My name is Michael, and I was saved and baptized in Jesus name in 1991, just four days before my accident and death, yes I was dead and was taken out of the body as the apostle John was when in captivity on the Isle of Patmos. I too was shown things to come and things that are and have been since the begining of christianity. I stood before the most beautiful and majestic white glowing cloud mass that looked like it had no end, and from in the midts of it Jesus came forth and with his arms open wide. He then spoke with out moving his mouth or lips and I heard him say, come on to me Michael. And at that moment I looked down to see what i was standing on and could not see for the cloud had enveloped me at the feet, and then i saw that i was dressed in, It was a white garment from neck down, then as the lord spoke and said come unto to me i seemed to float over toward him and we were face to face. And I held his hands and he said Michael go back and tell my Children that I want to save them all, but they will not allow me in their lives neither into their hearts. Go back and testify, tell them all what you have seen, and what you have heard. And i will give unto you a book that will bring them all back to remembrance and I shall also give unto you a sign in the heavens above the earth and this will let them know that I have sent you and that I am with you and that the words you speak are not of your own but mine. And great and mighty things shall come to pass on the earth in the days of the begining of the end, and people he has done just that, everything he said has come to pass and now has he made these things availible for the world to see. Please go to lastdayapostle.com and see for your selves what Jesus has done and has given us. He has allowed the Holy Ghost to be captured on film, yes that true I filmed a 33 minute visitation by the Holy Ghost over the stJohns river, In the state of Florida. The Holy Ghost has made his day view upon planet earth, and has brought forth the most awesome visual message that will lead all to complete salvation. The Holy Ghost is in the shape of a giant sickle, A Sickle is the tool used in the days of old by the farmers of wheat, to harvest their crops. And on the video, it clearly depicts what Isaiah saw in his day and recorded in Isaiah 53:1, Who has beleived our report, and to whom has the arm of God been revealed. Yes indeed the arm of God the right arm of God is clearly seen on the footage, and thats not all. Also seen clear as the day is long, is the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ that came forth in the eastern morning sky that beautiful morning. And thats not all, the sun was way late in coming forth that morning about 35 to 40 minutes late. And also a light appears at the botom of the elbow of the right arm of God Almighty, and strings of light begin to pour out of the light. And then the light at the bottom of the elbow begins to grow dim and then at the top of the arm at the elbow a light begins to shine bright and pure white. And as it did at the bottom of the elbow, so it also did at the top, strings of light begin to pour out of the light and these strings of light draw a giant white dove. Thus giving the world a visual message of the plan of salvation which Peter gave oraly on pentecost, please go to the site there are pictures from the footage now availible on the site, click on the event photos and see what Jesus Has brought forth, its the begining of the fulfilment of Revelations 14:14 to 16, Acts 2:38, Joel 2:28 Isaiah 53:1, a must see, and if you would like this footage for your own use to gain the lost and deceived please email me att Lastdayapostle@hotmail.com and I will with out a single thought give you the access pass word that unlocks the actual footage area of the Lords site, thanks for your time and labors of such awesome love for our King Jesus Christ, bye.

Rev Father: I am delighted to find such a wondeful website displaying a wealth of information not only about The Church of Holy Cross Cross, but most anf foremost about our faith! Reading other guests' messages, it's evident that one of the accomplishements of this site is that it brings people from everywhere together, not a small feat in my humble opinion. Your website is an example for other parishes to follow. May God bless you and keep you health and safe to continue His good works!

Today I was able to finally link up to your services. Being a Greek & raised in the Greek Orthodox faith, it has been very difficult for me at the age of 69 and handicapped to get to church since there are none close enough for me to get to. Today was one of my greatest days to hear the services and hear the choir (as I used to sing in the choir at Sts. Constantine & Helen in Washington DC years ago). It is a true blessing that you are enabling all of us to link on and feel like we are there with you. Thank you. + Koralia

We have been attending various churches in our area, but none come close to the glorious hymns and chants, in Greek/English as the Greek Orthodox Church Services. Dear Fr. Peter and Fr. Christopher, I wish you all a blessed Lenten season. It never ceases to amaze me how God works in mysterious ways. I remember how we began this online ministry back in February or so of 1998 and we set a vision for this live broadcast to be used for those who were unable to attend the divine services either due to illness, travel, etc. Well, I want you both to know that Clio and I have been sick since Thursday and we were both unable to attend Liturgy on Sunday. I can't tell you what a joy and inspiration it was to log in and participate in the Divine Liturgy as much as we could from home. God bless you both and please continue your tremendous ministry on the Internet. Regards to everyone out in Belmont; we hope to see you all soon. Have a blessed Lent! In Christ, Theo and Clio Nicolakis

Unable to get to church today due to illness, so I really appreciated this opportunity to hear the Liturgy live as the best possible substitute for actually being in church. I do not speak Greek, so I very much appreciate whatever English is used in the Services. The sermon was great! Thank you! May the Holy Glorious Forerunner, Prophet and Baptizer of the Lord, John, pray for us all!

Hello to all. Wonderful to see a page dedicated to the Greek/Orthodox community. There are many times that I am unable to make it to my home church, as I it is 40 miles away and I live in the snow belt. I was thrilled when my mother, Marilyn Filipos, who is an entry or so behind me, told me of this site. Now, when the weather prohibits the drive I may at least feel that some part of me is still in touch with the church. Many Many Thanks!!!!

There are very few Greeks in the area in which I live. I was so pleased to have been informed of this site. The local Church we attend is an OCA church in which all is in English. To hear the Greek chants again is spiritually uplifting. Thank you.

I just had to sign your guest book, I just couldn't resist. You have many baskets (kalathia) to empty to fill them with the word of God. God bless you all and especially those who don't need God's blessing. Peace to all. Your site is definitely an asset to the Orthodox Church. Keep up the good work.

Fathers, I deeply appreciate your effort to host the Liturgy. For many who cannot be in the Temple weekly to share in the Liturgy this is a wonderful blesssing. I am certain this will also be a God-used tool to draw other to Orthodoxy. Of course, this is no substitute for one's presence at Liturgy, but must be the next best thing. Hearty blessings to the Holy Cross community. David

Wonderful how the children are involved, but a pity they do not sing the verses. I think that they could do a good job of it. God bless...slh

To the Reverend Christopher Flesoras, just a note to Thank you, for your Blessings and patience on Saturday, October 21 you performed a Baptismal for Mr. & Mrs. Peter Betsekas, little Sophie Elizabeth was exercising her lungs and finally went to sleep basically after the service was over. Videotape was made so I was able to listen to your words and realized that you being Greek and I being Roman Catholic, there are similarities in both religions, and you made it very interesting to me. So thanks again. By the way, it was very nice to see you this last Sunday. Peter' Mother Georgia Betsekas told me about the Fellowship lunch on November 19th, I hope to see you then. This is the first time that I visited this website. My friend and I were talking about Greek Orthodox, and I do not feel that I am very educated on the subject. I am Greek, but I am of a different religion. I am interested in converting to this religion, and I am anxious of learning more. Thank you for using today's technology in putting this information on the Internet.

Hi Fr. Chris! I have been on the website, but never noticed this guestbook. It is pretty cool. I think Holy Cross is leading the way in using technology to promote the faith. What a good tool for us newcomers! I have told our friends back at St. Nick's in Detroit, they are working on their website and I am sure they will check it out to get ideas! Great job by all who put this together and update it regularly. Here is an idea maybe a spot where folks can swap recipes for traditional Greek Food or just to have it posted or a Greek Culture section with traditions, etc... The faith has so much to do with the culture and traditions, it would be nice to include. PS - Hi Neil, Antigone, John, Michael, Peter, Paula & the Girls!

Accolades to the Youth Choir...they sound wonderful! Father Chris' Q&A session today underscores the weakness in our understanding of our Faith, and the need to expand that knowledge. Therefore, I would like to propose a session on the Internet that would address this void,i.e., Monday/Wednesday evening classes. Miss you all...GOHOLYCROSSCHOIR, Pari

I was so delighted to find your web site, I read everything with much interest. And the idea of listening to the service is absoulutely wonderful. I am impressed with all you have to offer. I hope that Father Jon in Modesto can install the same type web page with so much information. The service was wonderful, since at times I must attend classes during Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, I miss many services. This is the perfect way to stay involved with my faith, when I can not make it to church. Thank you again for the wonderful service you are providing to all of us. Ella Velthoen.

Dear Father Peter & Father Chris: Christ is in our midst! It was good to see you both at the Modesto festival today. The Lord is clearly blessing you and your parish! Please pray for me and our Mission here in Merced, CA: by God's grace, things are happening. But it is a different work--almost pure evangelism from here on out. Many years to you both!

Appreciate your opportunities for us to post of opinions on your site. Being this is being read on the world wide internet, and not only on this site by those who use the search mode, and find my name and old e-mail address, my newest e-mail address is serghi serghis my parish has it's own web site in Holmdel, NJ. Our pastor, Fr George Dounelis, is a good friend of your pastor here at Belmont's Holy Cross. What we lack in our church is this wonderful internet connection you have with the world. It's a shame we can't have access to the music, and is available only on Sunday's during the hours you are actually having your services. The positive aspect is what we have now is great in itself. Good luck and keep you all strong to live your Orthodox faith. God keep and bless our other friends also. Regards, serghi 9-10-2000; Sunday at 2:10PM Eastern time
